Where Eagles DareĀ is a 1968Ā war filmĀ directed byĀ Brian G. HuttonĀ and starringĀ Richard Burton,Ā Clint EastwoodĀ andĀ Mary Ure. It follows a joint British-AmericanĀ Special Operations ExecutiveĀ team of paratroopers raiding a castle (shot on location inĀ AustriaĀ andĀ Bavaria). It was filmed inĀ PanavisionĀ using theĀ MetrocolorĀ process, and was distributed byĀ Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.Ā Alistair MacLeanĀ wrote the screenplay, his first, at the same time that he wrote the novel of the same name. Both became commercial successes.

In the winter of 1943ā44,Ā U.S. ArmyĀ Brigadier GeneralĀ George Carnaby, a chief planner for theĀ Western Front, is captured by the Germans and taken for interrogation toĀ SchloĆ Adler, a mountaintop fortress accessible only byĀ cable car. A team of seven AlliedĀ Special Operations ExecutiveĀ commandos, led by British Major John Smith of theĀ Royal EngineersĀ andĀ U.S. Army RangerĀ Lieutenant Morris Schaffer, is briefed by Colonel Turner and Vice Admiral Rolland ofĀ MI6. Disguised asĀ WehrmachtĀ mountain troops, they are to parachute into theĀ German Alps, enter the castle, and rescue Carnaby before the Germans can interrogate him. After theirĀ transport planeĀ drops them off, Smith secretly meets with agent Mary Ellison, with whom he is in a relationship, and his contact Heidi Schmidt.
